Dogs and Cats Die Without Tags

The Peoria Humane Society and the Peoria Animal Welfare Shelter reminds pet owners that lost dogs and cats without rabies or identification tags often can't find their way home. Each year thousands of dogs and cats are destroyed in Peoria because their owners can't be found. Take the case of these three pets.

A young black Labrador Retriever was hit by a car on Route 150 near Brimfield and rescued. He was wearing a brand new collar and had been neutered but did not have any identification. He never found his way home. Although he was held for more than a week at PAWS, no one called or came in to claim him. He was euthanized.

A male Siamese cat was found dragging a leghold trap on its hind leg. This poor fellow was in good condition other than his injury from this trap but had no collar or tag. Without an owner, he had to be destroyed.

A neutered, male Norwegian Elkhound was found by a citizen and left at PAWS for the owner to reclaim. After holding him for the owner for three days, he was moved to the adoption area. Fortunately, he was placed into a new home.

All of these pets could have been returned to their owners if they had been wearing either Peoria County rabies or identification tags. Consider this:

bulletDogs and cats with identification receive veterinary care immediately if injured or sick.
bulletDogs and cats with identification find their way home 99% of the time.
bulletDogs and cats with identification often don't even have to come to the shelter - people who find them return them to their homes rather than bringing them to the shelter.

PAWS encourages all owners of dogs and cats to put a collar and tag on their pet, even if the animal lives inside all the time. It's their only chance to find their way home.
